D3 Supports GSMA's MSME Study in Six African Markets

D3 supported GSMA by managing data collection for a multi-country review of how African businesses utilize digital resources. The study took place in Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, with special attention paid to micro, small, and medium-sized businesses. D3 presented the relevant trends in the data to the GSMA team, who intends to use the collected data as a baseline for future research to support business growth across Africa.

D3 managed the CAPI-based surveys of the Egyptian, Ethiopian, Ghanaian, Nigeria, and Kenyan businesses using electronic data capture on our Research Control Solutions (RCS) software, and the South African sample was collected using a separate software. Fieldwork was conducted from February 26th to April 4th, 2023, by local teams of interviewers working in the native languages of each country. The field teams interviewed a total of 1,591 businesses, which were selected to provide a cross-section of commerce by size and sector in each country.

D3 appreciated the opportunity to craft a comprehensive research instrument with GSMA and to continue its work on connectivity across the African continent.
